What is a Uniform Registry Number?

A Uniform Registry Number (URN) exists in most states to identify the manufacturer and location of the products. The URN must be displayed on the law label in the states that require registration. Of 31 states with law label requirements, 16 require registration and can issue a URN. A single state’s URN must be registered in the other registering states for it to be recognized there. This “Uniform Registry System” exists so that manufacturers only need a single URN for their products across the states.

A single manufacturing company that has multiple plants must have a different Uniform Registry Number for each location.

U.S. companies that import and/or distribute foreign products must ensure that the foreign manufacturer has proper registration where required in the U.S. The U.S. importer/distributor is also required to complete advance registration in some of those 16 states before it can offer the foreign products for sale in those states.

Be certain that the registration number on your products, whether you manufacturer them or import them, is registered and active in the state where the products will be sold to avoid fines and products from being removed from sale!
